This orientation is designed to help faculty become familiar with the functionality and features of Zoom. The orientation will cover:

Launching a class session:

  • Connecting by audio and video
  • Using the Zoom toolbar to manage your virtual classroom

During a class session:

  • Calling on your students
  • Sharing your screen
  • Playing video

Troubleshooting Tips

Note that each session begins with your mic set to mute and your camera turned off. You or your Online Learning Facilitator should unmute your mic and turn on your camera when you are ready to begin.

The order of students in your gallery view is first determined by chronology of log-in. It changes when participants speak and/or raise their hands.

When you are ready to end your class, you or your Online Learning Facilitator will end the session by clicking on “End Meeting” in the lower right of your Zoom screen.

The “share computer sound” setting will remain active for the duration of the session, after the first time you select it. It is not necessary to toggle off the “share computer sound” setting after playing a video.

Do not select the “optimize for full-screen video clip” option before sharing a video.

When playing a video, do not select full-screen mode in the bottom right of the video, as you might normally do in class.

While videos are playing, your microphone will remain on, unless you manually turn it off in your Zoom toolbar.

When teaching from home, it is often best practice to use dial-in audio for yourself with a headset.

During class, the most common audio issue occurs when participants forget to unmute their computer speakers or raise their volume to an audible level.
